Table Of Contents

Search for how much Reddit shows up in AI answers and you will find 60 percent, 25 percent, 21 percent, 3.8 percent and 0.5 percent. All of them describe the last fourteen months. All of them are about Reddit. All of them come from teams that track AI citations.

They are not wrong, and they are not saying the same thing. Each one counts something different, in a different engine, over different weeks, on a different set of questions. Put side by side without that context, they look like a contradiction. Read with it, they tell a clearer story: Reddit is a large and recurring source in AI answers, its share moves fast, and no single figure is safe to plan around.

This article lays the published numbers out in one place, explains why they disagree, covers what the data says about B2B buyers specifically, and shows how to measure your own exposure instead of borrowing someone else's. It reads public studies. It does not contain Omnibound's own data, and every figure below is attributed to its source with the limits the source states.

The published numbers, side by side

The table lists the figures most often quoted, with what each one measures. Treat the last column as part of the number.

Source Period Engine What the figure counts Reported Reddit figure What the source says about its limits
Semrush, Nov 2025 Jul to Oct 2025 ChatGPT Search Share of prompt responses that cite Reddit About 60% in early Aug, about 10% by mid Sep The data does not show why; AI Mode and Perplexity were more stable
Tinuiti with Profound, Q1 2026 Jan 2026 Perplexity; ChatGPT; Gemini Reddit share of citations 24%; 5% or more; 0.1% Static prompts with commercial intent; platforms weighted equally
Tinuiti, Q2 2026, as reported by trade press Feb to Apr 2026 Perplexity Reddit share of citations 25% down to 7% Sample size not disclosed; no reason given
Foundation, May 2026 60 days Five engines, 50 B2B brands Share of the top-50 external citation domains 20.8% Does not break results out by engine
Promptwatch via Semrush, Aug 2026 Jul 18 to Aug 17 2026 ChatGPT Search Share of citations 3.8% down to 0.5% Called provisional; a data-collection problem cannot be ruled out

A few of these figures arrived through summaries, and the Tinuiti Q2 report sits behind a form. Before quoting any of them in your own work, open the source and check the number against the page.

Why five studies give five answers

Five questions explain nearly every disagreement. They are shown in the diagram below.

reddit_five_checks

What is counted

One study counts the share of responses that cite Reddit at least once. Another counts Reddit's share of all citations. A response can cite Reddit once among ten sources, so the first number can be many times larger than the second for the same behavior. That alone separates "about 60 percent" from "3.8 percent."

What it is divided by

Foundation's 20.8 percent is a share of the top-50 external citation domains, a list that already excludes the brand's own pages and the long tail. Tinuiti's figure for Google AI Overviews is a share of social-platform citations only. Change the denominator and the same Reddit activity produces a different percentage.

Which engine

In Tinuiti's January 2026 snapshot, Reddit's share was 24 percent on Perplexity, 5 percent or more on ChatGPT and 0.1 percent on Gemini. Engines retrieve differently, which is the subject of the guide to citation overlap across AI engines. An average across engines hides all of that.

Which questions

Tinuiti used static, commercial-intent prompts across nine product and industry categories. Foundation tracked queries for 50 B2B brands. A May 2026 analysis from BuzzStream, built on one tool's citation data and a set of B2B SaaS keywords, found every Reddit citation in its dataset came from Google's products and none from ChatGPT. That sits oddly beside the other studies, and the likely explanation is a different prompt set and a different slice of the engines, not a different reality.

Which weeks

Several of the figures above describe a swing, not a level. A number taken from the top of a swing and a number taken from the bottom are both accurate and both misleading if quoted alone. The reasons answers vary from week to week are covered in the piece on why AI search results fluctuate.

What moved, and when

reddit_three_drops

The diagram shows three published drops. Each panel has its own scale, because each study defines the share differently.

In the Semrush data, ChatGPT's Reddit presence fell from about 60 percent of responses in early August 2025 to about 10 percent by mid-September. Semrush noted that the timing lined up with Google removing its num=100 search parameter, presented that link as debated, and said its data does not show why the shift happened.

Tinuiti's Q1 report found Reddit's share had nearly doubled across categories between October 2025 and January 2026. Trade-press coverage of the next report put Perplexity's Reddit share at 25 percent in February 2026 and 7 percent in April, with no reason given.

In August 2026, Promptwatch recorded Reddit's share of ChatGPT citations falling from 3.8 percent in late July and early August to 0.5 percent in mid-August. In the same period it saw smaller declines in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode. Promptwatch itself called the result provisional and said it could not rule out a problem in its own data collection. The Semrush write-up reports OpenAI as saying it does not set a fixed level of visibility for individual sites.

Two things stand out. The swings are large: the three drops above remove roughly 70 to 90 percent of the starting share, within weeks or a couple of months. And they go in both directions, as the October-to-January rise shows. A source that can double and then lose most of its share inside a year is not a stable foundation for a strategy built on one number.

What nobody knows yet

The studies are candid about their limits, and so should we be. Several explanations fit the timing, and none has been shown.

A measurement change could explain some of it: tools collect citations through their own prompts and methods, and a change on the tool side looks the same as a change in the engine. A change in what search results an engine can pull could affect which pages get retrieved. An engine could change how it ranks community sources. Reddit's content-licensing agreements with Google and OpenAI, announced in 2024, explain why the platform is readable by those companies, but they do not by themselves explain month-to-month movement. It is also possible that Reddit has moved earlier in an engine's process, shaping answers without appearing as a visible citation. The Semrush write-up raises that last possibility without settling it.

The honest summary is that the direction of recent movement is documented, the cause is not, and anyone offering a confident explanation is going beyond the published evidence.

What the data says about B2B buyers

Most of the large studies cover consumer or mixed categories. Foundation's is the clearest B2B read: 50 B2B brands across seven verticals over 60 days, with 5.1 million tracked responses.

In that dataset, Reddit was the top external source in six of the seven verticals. On discovery queries, the questions buyers ask before they have a shortlist, it accounted for 30.9 percent of external citations. By the same measure YouTube sat at 13 percent, LinkedIn at 11 percent, support documentation at 8 percent and review sites at 4 percent, which the study describes as Reddit running at about five times the share of review sites.

Read that with its limits. It is an agency's analysis of a brand set it chose. The page does not split results by engine. It was published in May 2026, before the reported August 2026 dip. And "external" excludes each brand's own pages, which matters because, as the piece on first-party versus third-party citations explains, owned and earned sources do different jobs.

What the B2B read supports is narrow and useful. Where buyers ask open, unbranded questions about what people recommend or regret, community sources show up often. It does not support a claim that Reddit will be 30 percent of your citations, or that it will stay that way.

Reddit is not the only community

It is easy to read all of this as a Reddit story. The same studies point wider. Semrush's 2025 work saw LinkedIn rising steadily across the platforms it tracked. Tinuiti's second-quarter page reports YouTube's share in Google AI Mode more than tripling in early 2026 and notes that the importance of LinkedIn and TikTok varies by category. Review sites, support documentation and professional posts all appear in the Foundation numbers.

For a B2B team, the useful frame is the community layer as a whole: public places where practitioners and customers describe a category in their own words. Reddit is the largest single example in the data, not the whole thing. The piece on how offsite mentions compound covers why independent pages that describe you consistently add up, whichever site hosts them.

What you can conclude, and what you cannot

You can conclude that community sources are a recurring and sometimes large part of AI answers to B2B discovery questions. You can conclude that engines differ a lot in how much they use them. You can conclude that the share moves fast enough that a single snapshot, including the ones in this article, goes stale quickly.

You cannot conclude a current, stable Reddit share for any engine. You cannot conclude that posting on Reddit causes citations, because none of the studies tests that. And you cannot conclude that a drop means Reddit has stopped mattering, since buyers still read the threads, and a thread an engine cites in one week may be retrieved again in another.

Measure your own exposure

Your questions, your category and your competitors decide your number, so measure it. The method is the same one used for any citation tracking, with the denominator labelled. Start with a fixed set of 15 to 30 buyer prompts, grouped by the kind of question: discovery, comparison, alternatives, implementation. Run each on the engines your buyers use, several times each, on a fixed schedule. For every run, record which pages were cited.

Then compute Reddit's presence three ways, and label each one. First, the share of all cited pages that sit on reddit.com. Second, the share of runs that cite reddit.com at least once. Third, the share of runs in which a cited thread mentions your brand. The first is closest to the studies above, the second shows how often a buyer would see a thread, and the third is the one that touches your pipeline.

Log the threads themselves: which ones keep getting cited, whether they describe you accurately, and whether they name competitors instead. A cited thread that describes you wrongly is a bigger problem than a low share. Keep the prompts, schedule and run counts fixed so the weekly series is comparable, and report a rate over repeated runs, because AI answers vary from run to run. Tracking citations in live model checks is what makes the series trustworthy.

What a swing should and should not change

Because the shares move, the most useful habit is deciding in advance how you will respond.

What you see A common overreaction A steadier response
Reddit's share falls across engines for a week Stop all community work Check your own tracked prompts for four weeks of repeated runs before changing anything
A study reports a jump Triple the posting volume Look at which threads are cited for your prompts and whether they are readable and accurate
A competitor's threads are cited and yours are not Plant replies under new accounts Fix inaccurate descriptions, contribute where the thread is read, and keep disclosure plain
Your mention rate rises while the Reddit share falls Assume the two are linked Look at which other sources now carry your name

Taking part in communities is worth doing because buyers read them, with or without a citation. That is a reasonable inference, not a measured result, and it is the reason to treat citation share as one signal among several. If you want help with the earned side, the AI Authority Building service is built around it, but the checks above work without any tool.

Misreadings to avoid

Treating a vendor's number as an industry number. Every study here comes from a vendor or agency with its own prompts, tools and clients. Averaging across engines. A blended figure describes none of them.

Comparing a consumer-heavy study with a B2B one. Tinuiti's categories include apparel and beauty; Foundation's are B2B verticals. The mix of questions changes the answer. Quoting only the top or the bottom of a swing. Always give the date range.

Reading "citation" and "mention" as the same thing. A thread can shape an answer without being linked, and a link can appear without the thread shaping anything.

Questions people ask

Is Reddit the most cited site in AI answers?

In several studies it ranks at or near the top, and in Foundation's B2B dataset it was the top external source in six of seven verticals. The ranking varies by engine and week, and it excludes a brand's own pages in some studies.

Did ChatGPT stop citing Reddit?

One vendor reported a sharp drop in August 2026 and called it provisional. A similar drop was reported in 2025. Check a current source before repeating either claim.

Does Reddit matter more for B2B than for other categories?

The one clearly B2B dataset suggests community sources are prominent on open discovery questions. The comparisons with other categories rest on different prompt sets, so they are suggestive, not conclusive.

How often should I re-check my own numbers?

Weekly, with the same prompts and several runs per check, and decide on trends over several weeks, not on a single result.

Before you quote a Reddit number

Next time a Reddit statistic lands in a deck or a thread, run it through the five checks: what is counted, what it is divided by, which engine, which questions and which weeks. Then replace it with your own: a fixed prompt set, a labelled denominator and a rate over repeated runs.

If you would rather not assemble that by hand, the AI Search Visibility Checker gives you a first read on how engines describe your brand today, and AI Search Intelligence keeps the prompt set, the cited sources and the trend in one place, so a swing in someone else's data does not become your plan.
